Anti-Capitalist Hypocrisy

So you and your buddies want to convince Americans to abandon capitalism and discard their “rampant consumerism,” but it turns out that it costs money to spread the socialist gospel. What’s an activist to do?

If you’re a devotee of the Canadian Adbusters magazine, you look the other way.

Ironies abound: Adbusters wants to promote its “Buy Nothing Day” with a 30-second commercial on CNN. The airtime will cost at least $5,500. And the commercial message itself depicts the United States as a fat pig, declaring that the world “could die because of the way we North Americans live.”

“Crass as it sounds,” the magazine’s editors tell activists in a form letter, “the more cash you send, the more folks we can shake and wake.”
