Fishing For Attention

On another front, Greenpeace last week denounced the granting of a European patent on genetically improved salmon. The improvement helps breed larger salmon, providing more food. But Greenpeace called the fish “‘monster’ salmon” and called on European governments to ban the fish.

Greenpeace must have missed the recent international conference on genetic improvement in Edinburgh, Scotland – not a single protestor was on hand for what The Scotsman newspaper called “a rational turn” in the debate. “The ayes and noes for genetic modification may be moving towards each other,” the paper noted, adding that even a representative of an organic research center said genetically improved crops “could be a way forward.”
