plumbs the depths of the “sustainable seafood” movement, aided by nannies from SeaWeb, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Oceans Trust, and the National Audubon Society. Armed with on-line guides that tell consumers with “social consciences” which species of seafood to eat and which to shun, these organizations are continuing to unnecessarily put politics on our dinner plates.
Rod Moore, executive director of the West Coast Seafood Processors Association, sums the movement up well: “What concerns me is that [the guides] are couched in terms of ‘We’re showing you how to buy sustainable fish,’ without telling people that what they’re really saying is, ‘We’re suggesting that you follow our moral standards as opposed to others.'”
